ATAC Nµline Cone and Plate Viscometer | At-Line Viscosity Analyzer

ATAC Nµline Cone and Plate Viscometer | At-Line Viscosity Analyzer

Industrial Product Summary

The ATAC NuLine Cone and Plate Viscometer is a high-precision, at-line viscosity analyzer tailored to meet the strict quality control and specification verification demands of modern process industries. Rooted in the reliable engineering lineage of the original ICI and REL viscometers, this updated instrument provides exceptional repeatability and absolute accuracy for evaluating both Newtonian and complex non-Newtonian fluids.

In demanding sectors like petroleum refining, oil blending, and chemical manufacturing, rapid physical property assessment is vital to keeping downstream operations optimized and ensuring final products adhere to commercial targets. By positioning critical rheological analysis directly adjacent to the production flow, this analyzer bridges the gap between traditional off-site laboratory testing and real-time process adjustments.

Measurement Technology & Rheological Principle

The operational core of a cone and plate viscometer relies on generating a completely uniform shear rate throughout the fluid sample being analyzed. During a measurement cycle, a minute volume of the process fluid—typically less than 2 mL—is placed within the precise gap between a flat plate and a low-angle cone. As the cone rotates at a controlled speed, it applies a distinct shear stress to the fluid.

What differentiates this design from other rotational methods is its geometry. The profile of the cone perfectly balances the increasing linear velocity further from the center by increasing the gap height proportionally. Consequently, the fluid experiences an identical shear rate across the entire sample area. The analyzer measures the exact mechanical torque needed to maintain rotation against the fluid's resistance, converting this data directly into dynamic viscosity.

While conventional laboratory viscometers frequently employ stainless steel geometries, the ATAC NuLine utilizes Tungsten Carbide for both its cones and plates. This high-grade material selection ensures excellent resistance to abrasion and mechanical wear. It prevents the critical geometry of the measuring interface from degrading over time, even when handling abrasive chemical matrices, particulate-heavy hydrocarbon streams, or high-viscosity coatings. Model dependent, the system accommodates shear rates from 20 to 10,000 sec⁻¹ and can evaluate viscosity ranges up to 13,500 poise, allowing process engineers to map comprehensive flow curves and yield stress properties.

Key Operational Benefits

  • Minimal Sample Volume: Requiring less than 2 mL of fluid drastically limits product waste, ensures rapid thermal equilibration, and significantly reduces the consumption of cleaning solvents.

  • Exceptional Structural Durgevity: The choice of wear-resistant Tungsten Carbide for contact components lowers the lifetime total cost of ownership (TCO) by minimizing the frequency of spindle replacements and re-calibrations.

  • Enhanced Measurement Accuracy: With an instrumental accuracy within 1%, the NuLine provides tighter process tolerances than many alternative instruments that commonly display errors of 2% or more.

  • Rapid and Stable Thermal Management: Featuring an integrated temperature-controlled plate and built-in preheat options, the system ensures the sample stabilizes at the exact target thermal point prior to testing, removing the risk of temperature-induced viscosity drift.

Deployment Environment & At-Line Context

Continuous, inline process analyzers hard-piped directly into refinery streams offer real-time data but often demand extensive bypass loop engineering, high capital expenditure, and intense maintenance schedules. The ATAC NuLine functions efficiently as an "at-line" process analyzer. It allows plant operators to pull physical grab samples directly from blending headers or reactor streams and receive high-accuracy rheological data within minutes right inside a local control room or satellite testing station.

The analyzer's chassis is built for the realities of industrial environments. Its capacitive touch control panel is positioned behind durable, easy-clean glass, and the solvent-resistant anodized aluminum housing allows operators to safely wipe away accidental hydrocarbon splashes or chemical residues without damaging the device.

Benelux Applications & Process Optimization

Maintaining strict compliance with physical property specifications is critical for industrial operators across Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. The ATAC NuLine provides valuable operational insight across several key applications:

  • Refineries and Petroleum Blending: Verifying the precise viscosity profiles of heavy fuel oils, lubricants, base oils, and bitumens to confirm individual batches comply with commercial delivery and transport guidelines.

  • Chemical and Specialty Polymer Plants: Monitoring polymerization stages and solutions where controlled shear evaluation is necessary to track molecular weight changes and non-Newtonian behavior.

  • Industrial Coatings, Paints, and Inks: Controlling fluid rheology during formulation to guarantee optimal behavior, preventing application flaws such as sagging or uneven leveling.

Data Integration & Calibration Continuity

Operational continuity requires straightforward data handling and verifiable calibration records. The ATAC NuLine is equipped with dedicated, Windows-compatible measurement software that enables real-time high-resolution graphing, direct sample comparison, and the rapid translation of data into industrial metrics (P, cP, Pa·s, or mPa·s).

To ensure complete regulatory and quality compliance, each analyzer is supplied as a comprehensive operational package. Depending on configuration, it contains six interchangeable cones to cover diverse viscosity ranges, six precision calibration reference oils, an official calibration certificate, and a professional Fluke temperature calibration kit. This extensive kit allows plant instrumentation technicians to perform routine, in-house verification paths independently, avoiding production downtime and eliminating reliance on external calibration services.

Regulatory Relevance

In the Benelux region, industrial activities are closely governed by environmental and technical regulations, such as the VLAREM guidelines in Flanders and corresponding environmental frameworks in the Netherlands and Luxembourg. Utilizing accurate at-line viscosity testing under defined shear conditions helps plants remain aligned with international ASTM and ISO testing standards. Ensuring finished product batches consistently meet specified physical properties reduces out-of-specification production runs, lowering the costs and regulatory risks associated with reprocessing or industrial waste disposal.
