airmoMEDOR® — Online Analyser for Odorous Sulfur Compounds

The airmoMEDOR is an automatic gas chromatograph from Chromatotec's Auto GC 866 platform, built specifically to track the sulfur compounds that drive odour complaints: methyl-mercaptan, ethyl-mercaptan, dimethyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide and diethyl sulfide. Detection runs down to 50–150 parts per trillion, well below the level at which most of these compounds become noticeable to the human nose. An optional module extends coverage to hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide.

Environmental agencies, waste-water treatment operators and industrial sites use instruments in this category when regulatory pressure or neighbour complaints require continuous, defensible proof of what is actually in the air — rather than periodic grab samples that can miss short-lived odour events.

How the measurement works

The airmoMEDOR separates the target compounds by gas chromatography, then quantifies them with an electrochemical wet-cell detector — Chromatotec's proprietary MEDOR® detection technology. Because the detector responds to sulfur specifically, it avoids much of the cross-interference that broader-spectrum detectors can show in complex ambient air matrices. A single analysis cycle takes 900 seconds for the five base compounds; adding the H₂S/SO₂ option extends this to 2400 seconds, and adding the wider mercaptan/thiol option set (IPM, TBM, NPM, 2BM, IBM, NBM, MES) extends it to 1800 seconds.

Where it's used

Urban and non-urban air quality monitoring, where sulfur-based odour is a recurring source of nuisance complaints near waste treatment, industrial or agricultural sites.

Industrial nuisance monitoring, giving a plant continuous data to correlate odour events with specific process steps.

Deodorisation process control, verifying that odour-abatement equipment such as scrubbers or biofilters is performing as intended rather than assuming it from the outlet alone.

Fugitive emission monitoring, tracking low-level leaks of mercaptans and sulfides that periodic sampling would likely miss.

Configuration

Chromatotec documents Ex-proof housing variants of the underlying GC 866 platform (Exd and Exp), with a separate certificate for a MEDOR Ex CSA configuration. Whether the airmoMEDOR is available, or normally supplied, in these Ex-proof housings is not stated explicitly on the product page itself — this should be confirmed with Chromatotec or AAVOS technical support before it is offered for a hazardous-area installation.

Why AAVOS

AAVOS supports the airmoMEDOR from product selection through to day-to-day operation: helping specify the right detection range and compound set for a given site, arranging installation and commissioning, and providing calibration and maintenance support so the instrument keeps delivering reliable data over years of continuous cycling. For sites weighing whether to add the H₂S/SO₂ module or a wider mercaptan panel, AAVOS can help match the configuration to the regulatory or nuisance-monitoring requirement rather than defaulting to the broadest, and slowest-cycling, option.

FAQ

What compounds does the airmoMEDOR measure?

By default it measures methyl-mercaptan, ethyl-mercaptan, dimethyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide and diethyl sulfide. An optional module adds hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide.

How sensitive is it?

Detection limits are below 150 parts per trillion for all five base compounds, which is why the instrument is used specifically for odour-threshold-level monitoring rather than only high-concentration process gas.

How often does it produce a result?

One measurement cycle takes 900 seconds for the base compound set. Adding the H₂S/SO₂ option extends this to 2400 seconds per cycle.

What is MEDOR® technology?

It's Chromatotec's proprietary electrochemical wet-cell detection method, paired with gas chromatography, developed specifically for trace-level sulfur compound analysis.

Does it need a carrier gas supply?

Yes — dry air or nitrogen at 3 bar, consumed at 4 mL/min or less, plus separate calibration gas flows for routine and validation cycles.

Can it be integrated into a remote monitoring network?

The unit has Ethernet connectivity and remote control, and stores data locally on 128 GB of SSD storage via its embedded Windows-based computer.

Is the airmoMEDOR certified for use in hazardous areas?

Chromatotec publishes ATEX/IECEx Ex-proof documentation for the GC 866 platform. Whether this specific model ships in a certified Ex-proof enclosure is not confirmed — contact AAVOS to clarify for your installation.

What other Chromatotec sulfur analysers are related to this one?

The airmoMEDOR shares its detection platform with Chromatotec's H2S MEDOR, H2S/TOS TS MEDOR, THT MEDOR, TRS MEDOR, energyMEDOR and airmoS analysers, each tuned to a different compound set or application.
